Renato Leite Monteiro has dedicated his life to the intersection of law and technology. He is a specialist in Privacy and Personal Data Protection with over 10 years of national and international experience, including knowledge of the European, American, and Asian models of personal data protection. He actively contributed to the discussions and drafting of Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD). He served as a partner at Baptista Luz Advogados and currently coordinates the Privacy and Data Protection practice area. He is also the founder and coordinator of Data Privacy Brasil.
Renato is a PhD candidate in Philosophy and General Theory of Law at the University of São Paulo and holds LL.M. degrees in Technology Law from NYU and NUS (he accepted a scholarship in Singapore to study and explore Asia). He is a guest lecturer at various institutions such as USP, Mackenzie, FGV, and Insper. He is a member, columnist, and Brazil Chair of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), and one of the few Brazilian professionals certified as CIPP/E, CIPM, and FIP, which internationally recognizes his expertise and experience in the field of data protection. He was a study visitor and consultant for the Council of Europe’s Data Protection Department.
In addition to law and technology, he enjoys cooking for friends and family – being hospitable is a characteristic of every good person from Ceará – engaging in high-intensity sports, and doing anything unconventional. This includes inventing plant-based recipes that resemble seafood (such as hearts of palm and plantain moqueca, just a suggestion), running mountains on uncharted paths, triathlon, and kitesurfing. He has always had a desire to become an astronaut and hopes to one day achieve that goal.
